MOM’s Senior Program Helps Seniors Stay in Their Homes
Are you aware of the wide range of services MOM provides to seniors in our community? Our Seniors Program helps seniors stay in their own homes as long as possible. Seniors who meet our eligibility requirements can receive financial assistance for help with rent, utilities and other expenses. With Senior Rides, we provide transportation by matching seniors up with volunteer drivers who can take them to destinations in the immediate area. These include medical and dental appointments as well as visits to the bank, hairdresser, or store. We keep seniors safe by requiring that drivers are vaccinated and that both parties wear masks and by asking Covid screening questions before each ride. In January, volunteers provided 20 rides for seniors in our community.
When Covid hit, MOM’s Seniors Program volunteers began offering food deliveries from the MOM Food Pantry. For seniors receiving food deliveries, a volunteer calls them to fill out the week's menu form together over the phone. Then during food distribution, a volunteer driver delivers their items to their home, often calling again to let them know the groceries are arriving (contactless delivery). Here’s a quote from a senior who received a delivery recently:
I was floored with my pantry delivery today. I have never been so blessed with such good food. Thank you and all the volunteers who help put this together. The driver who dropped it off was very pleasant. At this time when it is hard for me to get around and frugal is the watchword, this service is very much appreciated.
Our Seniors Program also matches volunteers with seniors for chores. Some of these are group projects for seasonal tasks like leaf raking, as well as ongoing monthly household help provided by an individual volunteer. We also piloted a Friendly Phone Visiting Program during Covid to address the health risks of isolation and loneliness. Volunteers are matched with a Senior who they call to chat and check in on. We are looking to expand that program this spring. Please see our volunteer page to learn how you can get involved.
