Over 700 backpacks were distributed during the 2013 program.

School Supplies Preventing Homelessness

While children are busy playing outside and reveling in days without school, parents are already beginning to think about getting the supplies their children will need in just weeks when school begins.

Each year, MOM runs a Back to School Program that provides school-aged children and teens with items that they will need to be successful in the upcoming year. Through the dedicated efforts of donors who supply the items and volunteers who assemble the packs, 1,000 children will receive a backpack filled with a robust collection of the supplies they need, customized by the grade in which they are entering.

The Back to School Program is yet another way that MOM is working to keep families in stable housing, supplying them with the assistance they need to free up financial resources to pay for rent. The program also supplies relief to families worried about the extra expense, and joy to children as they prepare for a great year ahead.

You can help! The program collects items now through the beginning of August.  During this time, consider the following:

  • If you have a child, consider buying double of what is on your child's list.
  • Help organize a supply drive in your neighborhood, your church or at your office.
  • Not sure what to buy?  Purchase items off of our most needed list.
  • Donate used clothing and sporting goods for school-aged children.  Familes will be encouraged to also visit the Clothing Closet during supply pickup and we'd love for it to be stocked for back-to-school.
  • If possible, please bring your items by Friday August 7 at 4:00 pm.  Donations will be accepted throughout August but may be used to give to children and area schools still in need after our scheduled client pick-up.  Thank you!
